Pastoral Prayer - May 29th, 2016

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. - Matthew 6:33 (NIV)

Good and Gracious Father,
Thank you for firsts.  Thank you for those first moments we opened our eyes today.  More than that, thank you for the first breath you breathed into our lungs, thank for the first time those breaths were interrupted when we have experienced love.  We thank you for those moments where we get to experience the first breaths of a baby.  We even thank you for allowing us to be there for those taking their last breaths this side of eternity.

So Forgive us, Jesus, while experiencing all these firsts that we neglect to put your Kingdom first.  When we forget that we are to love you with all that we have and all that we are first.  Forgive us when we choose to put others last and our desires first. Forgive us when we forget that it is at the end of the line, where we will find those that you have put first in your Kingdom.  For it is at the end of the line we will find our beginnings.  It is at the end of the line we will find righteousness.  It is at the end of the line where we will find you.

Holy Spirit, give us eyes to see, ears to hear, and a heart that is open to change.  Guide us and help us to seek first your Kingdom, seek first your righteousness.  Not to propel ourselves, but to lift up and care for others.  To restore the sick around us, to care for those alone and lost in our midst.   To show your world that before there ever was a thing called original sin, there is this beautiful promise of original blessing.

So Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end, we end our prayer with the first prayer that Jesus taught us when we pray…

Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever.
